ISOBEL SHAFFER

Painting began for me as a way to express to the people I love exactly what it is I find so unbearably moving about the built environment. I spend a lot of time walking around and looking at buildings, and trying to understand the relationship between form and light and space which makes certain places so poignant. I've tried to explain my work in terms of the political, and certainly there's a lot to be said about the discarded structures this country leaves abandoned, but at the end of the day it's about a joy and beauty I can't talk about in words.

Isobel primarily works with acrylic paints on wood or canvas, in her apartment in Ridgewood, Queens, New York City.
