MARSHA ZAVEZ
I cannot remember a time when I wasn’t drawing or painting. Art is woven into my sense of self, and it is in the act of creating that I find myself most at peace. There’s something about taking a blank canvas and transforming it into an image that brings me joy.
Early on, inspired by the early works of Richard Diebenkorn, I painted still lifes with food, eventually adding landscapes, animals and florals. In recent years, the gulls near my home on the NH seacoast have grabbed my attention. Intrigued by their antics, I add their imagined conversations to my work. Most recently, I’ve rekindled my love of collage, and have been adding bits of wallpaper, sheet music, pages from old art and poetry books, and found objects to my work. Finding that perfect balance between paint and paper is both a thrill and a challenge.
I worked as an oil painter for years but have since transitioned to mainly acrylic work. I have embraced the fast-drying quality of the medium and find that it complements my temperament as I am able to continuously add, change, take away, glue and layer, layer, layer!
Marsha earned her BFA and M. Ed at UNH and has taught visual art and drama at North Hampton School on the NH seacoast since 1999.
